New Trucking Safety Regulations Make Washington Roads Safer

In Commercial Trucking Accidents, Trucking Accident

For years, the team at Seattle Truck Law has advocated for stricter safety regulations that reduce crashes and put drivers’ lives first. In July, the House of Representatives passed the Moving Forward Act, an initiative designed to protect the lives of truckers and motorists alike.

Keep reading to learn how this bill affects trucking companies, the changes you can expect to see, and what to do if you or someone you love is hurt in a crash.

New Safety Technology Can Save Lives on the Road

The Moving Forward Act is an initiative that invests in safe trucking solutions designed to reduce crashes, prevent injury, and ultimately save truckers’ and motorists’ lives. These initiatives include technology aids like automatic braking and underride guards on the side of trucks. The new law successfully passed in part because of the dedicated advocacy of truck crash victims and surviving family members.

Changes like these are part of a larger movement toward improving safety in the trucking industry. In 2017, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration required new commercial trucks to include electronic stability control systems. These systems alert drivers when there’s a potential crash situation on the road. According to the agency, these mandates could prevent at least 1,700 crashes every year.

Many reputable trucking companies are complying with the new mandates and reporting success. Penske, the moving truck rental company, was an early adapter of the technology. The company has vocally backed the mandates and plans to implement collision avoidance systems and automatic emergency braking as standard equipment 2022. It’s this kind of trucking industry leadership that will continue to save lives every year.
